Owner Mike Gabarick brings 43 years of
musical entertainment experience to Sound FX Professional
Disc Jockeys. As a child, Mike developed a keen interest
in music while rock and roll was developing on radio and
late 50’s and early 60’s television. Experimenting with
different musical instruments, Mike became very serious
about the guitar as the Beatles were making their American
television debut on the Ed Sullivan Show in February of
1964. After forming his first band, Mike performed his first
professional job in August 1964, shortly after his 14th
birthday.
Through the 60’s until graduating from Millersville State
College in 1972 with a B.S. in Education, Mike continued
performing at high school dances, fraternity parties, local
restaurants and bars, and private parties for local
celebrities such as Mario Andretti. After teaching Science
in the Easton Area School District for a year, Mike decided
that he wanted to make music his full time profession.
Working as lead guitarist and vocalist for the Valley of
Sound, he performed upwards of eight times a week at
every major Pocono resort, including Paradise Stream, Penn
Hills, Strickland’s, Cove Haven, and Pocono Gardens. Mike
decided to leave the local Pocono scene to begin traveling
on the road and expand his musical horizons.
Mike toured extensively throughout the Northeast and Midwest
with Denny Hall’s Ready Mix in 1975, playing show and
dance rooms from New York to Columbus to Burlington, Iowa.
Mike then became lead guitarist for Allentown’s best known
band, Jay and the Techniques. Jay had scored national
Top 10 hits with “Apple Peaches Pumpkin Pie” and “Keep the
Ball Rollin” and traveled nationally, working the top hotel
show rooms and dance clubs from Boston, to Memphis, to
Toledo, with occasional Allentown appearances. An
interesting offer appeared and Mike became lead guitarist
and musical director for Tony Award Winner Frankie
Michaels. Frankie had been in the first musical
production of “Mame” on Broadway with Angela
Lansbury. He won the Tony when he was 11 years old, making
him the youngest winner ever, a record that still stands.
Concentrating on performances mainly in the Northeast, The
Frankie Michaels Road Show worked hotel show rooms and
nightclubs.
In 1978 Mike formed his own quartet called Talos
which continued traveling the Northeast, working mostly Top
40 dance rooms and hotels. In 1986 Mike decided to get off
the road and concentrate on local performances. Working as a
solo artist using computer and recording technology, Mike
worked restaurants and clubs in the Lehigh Valley and
Poconos. As the music scene continued to change, Mike
started to DJ as well as play live music. Live music was
beginning to become cost prohibitive, especially for wedding
receptions, and DJ music seemed to be the way to go.
Eventually Mike gave up live music performances and
concentrated solely on DJ music. For 20 years Sound FX has
been providing high quality musical entertainment for events
from birthday parties to wedding receptions.
